LGBTQIA+, ADHD, Autism, Sensory Challenges, Immune Compromised, Socially Anxious… anyone who prefers a quieter more laid back salon experience.

Read about how I ended up Salon Shy & how I help ease some of that anxiety.

Way back when I first started as a hairstylist, I knew I wanted my chair to be a safer space, and a judgement free zone, after struggling with conflicting feelings about salons in middle/high school. I was a teen with undiagnosed AuDHD, and felt uncomfortable and misunderstood, on a good day.

I dreaded stepping into a new salon and meeting new stylists. I was very much “androgynous,” it was my look, but also how I felt. Nonbinary was not in the vernacular yet. Stylists tried to soften and feminize my hair when I very clearly stated otherwise. That’s how I learned to cut hair, fixing it to suit my taste. I have always loved HAIR and found a lot of power, and joy expressing myself however I damn well pleased. I needed a stylist that wasn’t in cahoots with my parents!

Then I found MY stylist, and I learned to love going to the salon. I kept my hair Annie Lennox short and saw her every few weeks. She knew I was paying for my own cuts, since my parents were pissed I looked like a boy. She never pressured me into buying products I couldn’t afford. She always seemed genuinely happy to see me, she listened to me, and she cut my hair exactly how I asked, short A.F. I wanted to see some skin.

I never forgot how I felt walking out of there. Feeling myself. I don’t want anyone to miss out on that feeling, because they have social anxiety, sensory issues, have been misgendered, or misunderstood in the past. I want all of my guests to feel welcome, comfortable, honored and respected.

Reviews

Highly, HIGHLY recommend to anyone and everyone, especially if you’re genderfluid/non-binary, neurodivergent, queer, or any combination of those.

Jessica works in a beautiful salon with a relaxing general ambience and a cozy private room. I was immediately offered water and felt welcomed and at ease instantly. The products they use work well and are safe and sustainable. The seating was cozy and comfortable. 10/10 business all around!

Jessica is a wonderful human being and an incredible hairstylist. You won’t leave disappointed! I felt relaxed and comfortable, which I’d never really experienced in other salons before. They were kind, helpful, and extremely talented. I feel like I was heard and got the haircut of my dreams. I could not be happier with their services. Highly, HIGHLY recommend to anyone and everyone, especially if you’re genderfluid/non-binary, neurodivergent, queer, or any combination of those. As someone who’s all three, it’s a dream come true, as it can be hard to find salons where I feel comfortable and like I can be myself. Thank you for your amazing work, Jessica!!

Five Stars!

From the first visit, Jess quickly made me feel at ease and welcomed. She is such a warm, generous, and patient person. She has taken her time in helping me figure out how to approach a gender affirming haircut, while also consistently giving me the best haircuts I’ve received.
